Appendix A: Lyrics to “Madame Pele”

Written by Dolly Parton

Madame Pele
Pele, Goddess of Fire (intoned)

There’s a lady that lives here
She’s revered and she’s feared
A goddess as legend would have it
They say when she sleeps
She sleeps very deep
As long as there’s peace in the valley

Chorus 1:

Whatcha mad about Madame?
What’s got your blood in a boil?
What has caused this turmoil
And made you uncoil
Like brimstone snakes in motion?
Is it power or glory
Or attention you seek?
You’re a two-sided story.
Are you beauty or beast?

(Pele, Madame Pele)
Oh your passion is awesome to me.
(Pele, Goddess of Love)

Walk soft by her bed
She’s sleeping not dead
Don’t provoke her
or stir her emotions
Steer clear of her path
Don’t challenge her wrath
She rages with tempered explosion

Chorus 2:

Whatcha mad about Madame?
What’s got you flowing again?
Are you just like a lady delivering a baby
Giving birth to new man?
You’re a legend unequal
In grandeur and style
Oh but you’re still a mystery in everyone’s eyes

(Pele, Madame Pele)
Aw but you’re beautiful when you’re mad

Beware of her anger
but be aware that she’s sweet
Just look at the flowers kissing her feet

Madame Pele
Goddess of Fire
